“Awaiting Her Final Grades” is a new semi-perfect sonnet I just published this month! It is designed around the story of Punchinello by Max Lucado and 1 Samuel 16:7. I also drew inspiration from “Seasons of Love” from the classic musical, Rent and my own personal experience of waiting to receive my own final grades this semester. The same thing always happens every semester: I have to wait an extraordinarily long time to see what I got, finally, in each of my classes. And, then, when the grades finally do appear, every effort I put into my grade seems to always get lost in translation. All that remains is a letter (that society judges you by). It ‘s not fair really, as I’ve tried to express here, because as 1 Samuel 16:7 says: “But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” Thus, the message is: quit worrying about your grades/”grades”. Go run the race God has set out for you and don’t look back at what other people think of you; truly, there is honor in that.
