This Month: A Writer’s Hiatus

————————————————–

Dear Readers,

In truth, an inactive blog soon becomes a dead zone. Why this phenomenon? And what could possibly be so distracting? I don’t claim to have the answer, but I know that people have their reasons. Mine happens to be that most of the writing I’ve done in the past few months hasn’t been creative. In fact, most of my creative energies have gone into investing in a few specific people in my life and my writing energies have been channeled into vigorously writing essays for different school assignments. And no, though I did consider it, I’m not going to put my Composition 1 papers on thewriteaholic. Sorry, nice try, but not happening.

I say all this because, even if I don’t blog about it, I do still keep writing. It’s an intricate part of me that isn’t going anywhere; nevertheless, over the course of the last few months, I’ve been guilty of letting this blog go to waste, and, as I turn my attention back to it, I want to express my sincerest apology to my readers. It’s a lot like not talking to a close friend for 9 months. I’m sure they would be pretty upset. Thus, my writing hiatus has no excuse. I am deeply sorry, and I vow to publish something every two months from here on in. Because, in truth, the real reason for constantly NOT posting something for the last few months has been rooted in the very fact that posting something would ensue commitment and time that I told myself that I didn’t have just then.

In light of that, the most recent post on here was “After We Broke Up”, which is actually “Before We Broke Up” under a different title. The title change comes with the fact that the poem was actually about things I knew about breaking up after they happened. It was a huge staple too, because I both my sister and I had just majorly broken it off with both of our boyfriends; thus, armed with the knowledge of previous break-ups and an increasing curiosity about sonnets (particularly Italian and Shakespearian), I wrote this poem. Besides “What is Friendship?”, it’s the only other real sonnet I’ve ever written, excluding “Crimson (An Italian Sonnet)”, which, from a writer’s standpoint, I view as a botched disaster in need of constant fixing (an embarrassment, really). I hope you enjoy the subject matter. It’s intended to be philosophically correct rather than focusing on a specific event or object, just so you know.

As for other things, I’m preparing for my upcoming Parnassus submission, which, I think, is due in about a week or so. I’m writing a poem that I call “(The) Anatomy of a Compound Microscope”, but it’s not finished yet. It, in fact, actually might be too long. Lines range anywhere between 4 and 26 syllabuls, as of currently. As you can see, it’s highly variable right now and needs fixing, but since I’ve only written it recently, it’s currently fermenting in one of my writing books until it can be edited further. I’m actually considering making it into a prose poem, which would be exciting, as I’ve never written one of those before. It’s too long, however, to make into a sonnet, as I would have liked it to be, but you never know, anything can happen when you’re writing, so I’ll keep you posted.

The red folder, you ask? Well, the red folder is the red folder; it hasn’t budged since at least March. Thus, I’m sure there’s some juicy editing for me to do in there, so I might pull out like one poem at a time, edit it, and put it up. Remind me not to get too involved with school and forget again. LOL (but no, I’m actually quite serious). 🙂

There’s actually one last reason for my “writer’s hiatus” so to speak: perpetual lack of inspiration. For some reason my imagination has become dull and writer’s block has paid a visit more than once. I was absolutely THRILLED lately when my muse came back (just last week, actually). Hopefully, that will enable me to shoo out the writer’s block and usher in inspiration. I’m excited. Let’s do this thing!

And again, as always, thank you sooo much for reading. I would be nothing without you guys, my readers. So, keep reading! I will keep posting. 🙂

Much love to all! Until next time.

Your Writer,

Jessica A. McLean
