As Brandon’s finger hovered over “call”,
he exhaled a deep breath, then felt it fall.
Hearing her phone ring, he breathed, “Calm down, wow!
“Ruthie’s your friend, the same as for years now.”
“Hello?”, she answered. “Yeah, what’s going on?
I’m just hanging at my parents’ house. C’mon —”
“Want to go on a date with me?”, he blurted.
It was suddenly there, somehow inserted.
“Uh, sure,” she said, her voice sounding surprised.
“Ok, what time? I’ll come get you,” he devised.
They planned for a bit before he hung up,
it all feeling too good to interrupt.
See recent calls for cupid’s true arrow,
eternally lodged in their hearts’ marrow.
This love poem is written by Jessica McLean and is dedicated to Ruthie and Brandon Paulus on their wedding day, October 1, 2022.
