Jesus, swaddled in a nailed manger, lay
serenely in a scratchy bed of hay.
Mary treasures his coos, his chubby cheeks,
smiling at her baby when their hands meet.
Joseph stands amid cows, donkeys and sheep,
protecting his wife, the child, where they sleep.
Angels appear in trembling shepherds’ fields,
proclaiming the Messiah is revealed.
The shepherds then hurry to go and see
Him, named “Immanuel”, from Galilee.
Three wise men come on camels from afar,
to Bethlehem, following a yonder star.
.
The same star marks the stable with its light
where all prostrate by His manger this night.
