Once
there was a gum and a shoe
stuck together till eternal doom
because the gum liked the shoe
and the shoe liked the gum
and they didn’t mind
being one.
Till one day
the shoe thought
“This is not quite right”
So it said to the gum,
with one large thump,
“We shouldn’t hang out;
we’ve stuck long enough.”
And the detached gum
cried for the shoe now gone
and so it was they became
two not one.
Some years past
and the shoe could not believe
he’d had so many adventures,
done so much
without the gum on his street.
Nor could the gum so think
that he’d seen so many
things walk by
while he was not on a shoe
and so both found their styles.
And if ever again
should they come to meet
it won’t be to stick
but to tell about
their adventures and dreams
that they fulfilled
in an unstick while
because
they were better off by themselves
and truer by some miles.
